Math. For many students, this simple four-letter word triggers a wave of stress and self-doubt. For some Black high school students in Ontario, the challenge can feel even greater, rooted in an educational system that has not always recognized or nurtured their potential. As parents, it’s painful to watch your child struggle with math anxiety, feeling like their dreams are slipping away one equation at a time. But here’s the truth: math anxiety is not a permanent condition. It’s a challenge that can be overcome with the right support, tools, and environment.
At Roots to Routes Academy, we’ve made it our mission to empower Black students by creating a supportive, identity-affirming space where they can thrive academically. In this guide, we’ll explore why math anxiety happens, how it disproportionately affects Black students, and what parents can do to help their children overcome it. More importantly, we’ll show you how Roots to Routes Academy is transforming lives by tackling this issue head-on.
Math anxiety is more than a fear of numbers; it’s a pervasive issue that can hinder a student’s academic progress, self-esteem, and career aspirations. According to a study published in the American Psychological Association, 20% of high school students worldwide experience moderate to severe math anxiety. For Black students, these numbers may be even higher due to systemic barriers, cultural stigmas, and a lack of representation in math-related fields.
For Black students in Ontario, math anxiety isn’t just an academic issue; it’s a matter of equity. Studies show that Black students are often underrepresented in advanced math courses and STEM fields. According to the Ontario Alliance of Black School Educators (ONABSE), Black students in Ontario face disproportionately lower academic expectations from educators, which can lead to disengagement and underachievement.
The effects of math anxiety ripple far beyond the classroom. A child who believes they “are bad at math” may carry that belief into adulthood, limiting their career opportunities and self-confidence. As parents, breaking this cycle starts with understanding and addressing the root causes of math anxiety.
Math anxiety is an emotional response to math tasks, often characterized by feelings of fear, stress, or helplessness. It can manifest as:

The environment at home plays a significant role in shaping your child’s attitude toward math.
Math doesn’t have to be boring or intimidating. Here are some ways to make it fun:

Our curriculum is designed by Black educators who understand the cultural nuances and experiences of Black students. This representation helps students feel seen, valued, and motivated.
We foster an atmosphere where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. Our small class sizes allow for personalized attention, ensuring every student gets the support they need.
Our teachers are not just instructors; they are mentors and advocates who are deeply invested in each student’s success. By celebrating Black excellence in math and STEM, they inspire students to believe in their own potential.
We focus on building foundational skills and celebrating small victories. Over time, students see that they are capable of tackling even the most challenging math problems.
At Roots to Routes, we believe in working closely with parents to reinforce a positive learning environment at home. We provide regular updates on your child’s progress and offer resources to support their journey.
Take the story of Jordan, a Grade 10 student who came to Roots to Routes terrified of algebra. With personalized coaching, a patient mentor, and a curriculum tailored to his needs, Jordan not only overcame his math anxiety but also began tutoring younger students.
